    Slow news day…

    By Bethany | June 28, 2008

There is not a lot going on in the world of the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Here’s is the low down on the latest.  Nikita Filatov was drafted first overall in the CHL Draft, by the Sudbury Wolves.  Basically, all this means is that if Nikita does NOT make the big club, and we feel like he’s not ready for the AHL, then he will play with the Wolves.  And, yes I am correct on saying that he could play in the AHL, as a European there is no age restriction.  We also are currently working to get Nikita under contract.

Duvie Westcott will be waived at noon today.  If he is not picked up off of waivers, the Blue Jackets will buy out his contract, and he will become an unrestricted free agent come July 1.  It’s kind of bitter sweet to say goodbye to Duvie, at least for me.  He was the kind of guy you enjoyed watching on the ice, and well, concussions really played a part in his down fall in Columbus.

No word yet on the contract talks between the Jackets and Leclaire.  If he is not signed by July 1, he could accept an offer sheet.  The chances of that happening are very slim however, there are not too many clubs that fit the bill according to Portzline:

But it’s very unlikely a club would be willing to do that. There are only two or three clubs who meet the following criteria: 1) desperate for a No. 1 goaltender; 2) plenty of room under the cap; 3) willing to part with two first-round picks, a second-round pick and a third-round pick per the compensation they’d owe Columbus; 4) have all the picks in place to extend such an offer sheet.

Another thing to remember is that this is the first season that Pascal Leclaire was actually healthy.  It remains to be seen whether or not he can do it again.

Peca is also still not signed.  According to Puck-Rakers, Don Meehan, the agent for Michael Peca (and Pazzy and Filatov) will meet with Howson about a contract, but there is no telling whether or not it will be before July 1.

And, on a random note, I will be liveblogging the “Free Agent Frenzy” on Tuesday.
