    Checkin in with Baby Jackets…

    By Bethany | October 27, 2007

Starting with the Syracuse Crunch…they’re not exactly tearing up the AHL…but Derrick Brassard is tearing up the league.  Brassard is #5 in the AHL in 8 games played he has 3 goals and 7 assists.  Joakim Lindstrom has 5 goals and 3 assists.  Scott Howson has said that Brassard will be staying in the minors.

“We had a good conversation,” Howson said. “I told him to keep focusing on what he’s trying to accomplish in Syracuse, and not to worry about Columbus. He said that he had a little trouble with that the first week of the season, but not now. That’s his team now, and he wants to do well.”

Howson also said the Blue Jackets will not recall Brassard based solely on his point production. Instead, they want to see Brassard scoring points in the right way, with the necessary resolve to show that he’s up to the rigors of the NHL.

“I’m not there with him every day, so I can only judge by what our coaches and scouts are telling me,” Howson said. “But the reports are that he’s showing up at the rink long before practice, that he’s watching video … and those are all good signs.”

As much as I think Brassard will help the Jackets I don’t want to call him up too early I want him to develop as a player.  He’s our number 1 center in the future…and when that happens it’ll be great..but I’m willing to wait.

Now for my favourite prospect Stefan Legein of the Niagara Ice Dogs.  In 12 games played he has 10 goals (2 shorties) and 8 assists while tallying 46 penalty minutes.   The right winger can’t make the big time soon enough.  He fits our clubs personality so well, we’re tough and hard to play against and that’s what he is.  I do plan on going up to see him play…at some point but we’ll see.

Jakub Voracek, our number 1 draft pick in 2007 has 3 goals and 19 assists in 8 games played.   He’s 8th in the QMJHL in scoring and has  played  6-10 games less than the players who are ahead of him.

“The guy is averaging more than three points a game. It’s amazing,” said Monast. “He’s everywhere on the ice and it’s unbelievable what he’s doing. He finds everyone on the ice and he makes the game really easy for the other guys. He makes everyone better.

Steve Mason our amazing goalie prospect is on fire!  In 7 games played he has 7 wins a .947 save percent and a 1.86 goals against average.  The London Knights were 0-6-0 in their first 6 games and now that Mason is back they have yet to lose a game.
